end of exams!

as of 4:15 yesterday afternoon i had officially completed my first year at university - scary stuff! one of my first thoughts as i put my pen down after two hours of writing about medieval marriage and beliefs about death was that i could now dedicate more time to writing this blog - as well as having a summer of baking ahead of me! the sun is still shining and we're off to the pub for a celebratory drink. this weather puts me in the mood for a gorgeous peach and raspberry tart (a hummingbird bakery recipe). i've made it once before and it is so refreshing and yummy! (apologies for the low picture quality, these were taken on my ipod)

i remember being so chuffed that it turned out looking so much like the original picture (normally a rare occurence!)

after the pub i am off home for a day (job registration) and hopefully i will have time to whip up some brownies - if so photos should follow!

hummingbird reminiscing

at the end of march two of my friends and i went up to london with the university's disney society (oh yes, we have one of those!) to go and see the lion king in the west end (which is AMAZING!). we went up early so that we could have a wander around london during the day and i insisted that this began with a trip to the hummingbird bakery. we chose the south kensington bakery so that we could go around the museums afterwards (what could be more natural after tea and cake that looking at stuffed animals?!) i have only been to hummingbird once before - a day trip to london for my sixteenth birthday resulted in a visit to the portobello market shop. those were by far the best cakes i have ever tasted and so i had been pining for a visit ever since.

so here i am with my chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting:

and a close up:

my friends had a dark chocolate and ginger cake as well as a vanilla cake with vanilla frosting:

it was a gorgeous day and it was so nice to be able to sit and watch the world pass by!

unfortunately my cake was a little dry - chocolate cake is always harder to make and keep moist - but it was still delicious and it will not stop me from going back again!

on another note the university is starting up a baking society (finally!) and i am planning on running for the committee. currently debating between two roles: social secretary and events co-ordinator. clearly there is similarity between the roles, but the former deals with the socials whereas the latter is focussed on organising talks and workshops. i think i might go for the events co-ordinator as it will probably be better experience for my future event management career (my second dream job!). so i'll need to put a manifesto together and bribe my friends into coming along to vote. i'm going home a couple of days before so i might be able to whip up some brownies - which no one can resist! so i will let you know how the election goes - fingers crossed!

logo doodles

so here are a few doodles i did the other day (whilst procrastinating from revision - whoops!) i haven't quite decided which style i like best. my favourites are the one in the top right, the large one in the right-centre and the ones more similar to handwriting the in the bottom right corner (some clear right preference going on here!). i think at this point i am swaying towards the handwritten ones with a little heart - aah the small girl in me lives on!

also these were doodled in a super cute notebook my university housemates bought me for my birthday:

for now back to revision

welcome!

welcome to my new and first ever blog! entitled "nen's" it is going to be about me (nen - nickname!) and the things i like. in particular it is going to focus on baking. this is a great hobby of mine and my dream is that one day i will be able to open a bakery called nen's. although this will probably remain a pipedream i hope that this blog will at least give me some expression for my baking needs!

having never blogged before i can imagine this will be a bit clunky and unnatural to start with but i hope it will get better with time and that you will enjoy going on this journey with me!
